Cherise Martinez McBride is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Berkeley studying the intersections of literacies, digital technology, and pedagogy. Cherise’s interest in CTERIN stems from her passion for contributing to the design of just social futures, namely educational systems that honor students’ lived realities in humanizing and equitable ways. Cherise’s dissertation research explores meaning-making in digitally-mediated environments as socioculturally-situated multiliterate activity. Drawing from literacy theory and connected learning frameworks, her research employs qualitative methods including digital ethnography to explore multimodality, digital publics, and participatory networks as teachers develop their digital pedagogy.

Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, Cherise taught English at the high school, adult school, and community college levels. She now teaches teachers across preservice and in-service settings. Cherise has taught teacher education courses at Stanford University and UC Berkeley, including Urban Education with her faculty advisor Dr. Jabari Mahiri, Practicum Field Supervision, and Technology Integration. Cherise also helped designed an online Digital Pedagogy course for the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) for the undergraduate Education minor. Cherise led a grant-funded course wherein she led Bay Area public school teachers in designing digital learning segments via blended learning.

Beyond the University of California System, Cherise has been a teacher consultant with the Bay Area Writing project since 2013, where she facilitates in-service teacher professional development, coaching, and has helped calibrate national writing assessments. Cherise has presented her research to national and international audiences at Stanford University, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the American Educational Research Association.

Cherise was born and raised in California’s central valley and educated in California public schools from head start to high school. She also holds a B.A. in English Literature from UC Berkeley and an M.A. in Education from the University of San Francisco.
