Jamie Gravell is a doctoral candidate at University of California, Los Angeles in the Urban Schooling Division of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. She received her MA in Race & Ethnic Studies in Education from UCLA in 2013, and her BA in Political Science and Secondary Education from American University in 2008. Jamie has been involved as a researcher in the UCLA Lab School, a facilitator for a youth participatory action research program, and a technology integration coach for Los Angeles Unified School District during her time at UCLA. Previously, she was a high school social studies teacher and student government sponsor in the Washington, D.C. public schools. She is currently interested in the possibilities of utilizing critical theory and sociocultural theory to understand how teachers make sense of the ideologies, practices, and pedagogies of digital technologies in order to design learning experiences for pre-service and in-service teachers. Her dissertation work focuses on the ways in which teachers in an urban teacher residency make sense of the intersections between social justice and technology. Jamie also engages teachers in utilizing emerging technologies as tools to engage students in more empowering and authentic social studies curriculum and instruction in K-12 public schools.
