Charley is a doctoral candidate in the Education department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research examines the intersections between teaching history, racial formation, and teacher preparation. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Charley spent 5 years teaching history and English in San Francisco, where she was preoccupied by questions about the stories we teach, to whom, and how they vary depending on teacher and student demographics and beliefs. These questions inform her work with CTERIN and her research interests more broadly. Charley also works as a graduate student researcher and program associate for the History & Civics Project at UC Santa Cruz which provides professional learning opportunities to social studies teachers across California. Her work is grounded in critical theories of race, whiteness, and language.
