Gretchen completed a B.A. in Geology at Oberlin College, and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at UCSC. She spent over a year on research ships at sea as a technician and a scientist. She started working with pre-service and in-service science teachers as a post-doctoral fellow in UCSC's Education Department and served as the first director of UCSC's California State Summer School for Math and Science (COSMOS) program for high school students. She has taught in the Earth Sciences Department at UCSC and in the Geology and Meteorology Department at Kean University in New Jersey. Gretchen works to improve UCSC's support of prospective science and math teachers and increase the number of science, math, and engineering undergraduates who pursue secondary teaching careers.
