Preparing Teachers to Educate Children in Immigrant Families

Dr. Carolyn Sattin-Bajaj, Associate Professor, UC Santa Barbara

This workshop was designed to introduce teacher educators to key policies, topics, and research relevant to teachers working with immigrant students and families. It will begin with a brief overview of basic statistics on recent migration trends in the U.S. and California and will include a short discussion of important research findings about the ways that family migration experiences influence children. The workshop draws heavily from participants’ experiences and insights and provided participants with ideas for concrete ways to incorporate students’ immigrant backgrounds into teacher education courses and preparation programs overall.
