Steven Z. Athanases (Ph.D., Stanford University) is Professor and the Dolly and David Fiddyment Chair in Teacher Education, School of Education, University of California, Davis. He studies teaching and teacher education, focused on literacy, English teaching, diversity, and equity. A former high school English teacher, he has published widely in both research and practice-based journals and is coeditor of Mentors in the Making (with B. Achinstein), Teachers College Press, 2006. Athanases has received numerous awards for teaching at the high school and university levels, for distinguished research from the Association of Teacher Educators and the National Council of Teachers of English, and for Outstanding Reviewer of journal manuscripts from the American Educational Research Association. He loves working with early-career teachers and seeks to partner with them on inquiry into classroom practice. Currently he is PI/Project Manager for a James S. McDonnell Foundation Teachers as Learners grant focused on New Teachers Learning Disciplined Improvisation for Meaningful Talk in Diverse Classrooms. At UC Davis he also is Research Director of the Center for Shakespeare in Diverse Classrooms.
