On July 29th and 30th of 2020, the Supervisors of Teacher Education Network Team (STENT), a CTERIN sponsored community, held a conference called Developing a Community of Supervisors for Equity and Justice. This conference focused on strategies and techniques for teacher educators, particularly supervisors, to make anti-racist and socially-just practices central to the student teaching experience. Please find the various conference materials shared below for your reference.

Tyrone C. Howard is professor in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies’ at UCLA. Dr.
Howard is also the inaugural director of the new UCLA Pritzker Center for Strengthening Children and Families,
which is a transdisciplinary consortium of experts who examine academic, mental health, and social emotional
experiences and challenges for the California’s most vulnerable youth populations. He is also the director of the
UCLA Transformation of Schools which serves as a thought partner for districts, counties, and states to pursue
whole child, whole community approaches to school systems improvement. Professor Howard has published over
85 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and technical reports. He has published several bestselling
books, among them, Why Race & Culture Matters in Schools and Black Male(d): Peril and promise in the
education of African American males. His two most recent books, All Students Must Thrive, focuses on equity,
race, trauma, and learning has become a must read for all educators. And “No More Teaching Without Positive
Relationships” examines the importance of relational trust between teachers and students to enhance students’
learning. Dr. Howard is considered one of the premier experts on educational equity and access in the country.
Dr. Howard is also the Director and Founder of the Black Male Institute at UCLA, which is an interdisciplinary
cadre of scholars, practitioners, community members, and policy makers dedicated to examining the nexus of
race, class, and gender of school age youth. A native and former classroom teacher of Compton, California, Dr.
Howard was named the recipient of the 2015 UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award, and was named an AERA
Fellow in 2017. During the last five years, Dr. Howard has been listed by Education Week as one of the 60 most
influential scholars in the nation informing educational policy, practice and reform. -
Rita Kohli is an Associate Professor of Teaching and Teacher Education in the Graduate School of Education at
the University of California, Riverside (UCR) and is the co-founder and co-director of the Institute for Teachers of
Color Committed to Racial Justice (ITOC). Her research examines the professional experiences and wellbeing of
teachers of Color as it is impacted by racism and racial justice work. Kohli is the co-editor of the book,
Confronting Racism in Teacher Education: Narratives from Teacher Educators, and she is currently in contract
with Harvard Education Press for a book on the racialization, resistance, and reimagination of teachers of Color.
She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Teacher Education, and Race, Ethnicity, and Education, and
her research has been supported by CTERIN, the California Endowment, and the Branch Alliance for Educator
Diversity. Kohli was the recipient the UCR Innovator for Social Change Award (2016), the Scholar Activist and
Community Advocacy Award from the Critical Educators for Social Justice Special Interest Group of AERA
(2017), and the Early Career Award from the Division G: Social Context of Education of AERA (2018). -
